Bartender Jasmin “Yaz” Muratagic will be paddling his way across Canada, starting Aug. 25 for a Cayman Islands’ cause that’s close to his heart. He plans to cover more than 400 miles to raise money and awareness for the Nadine Andreas Foster Home in George Town.
Fidel Murphy’s is holding a bingo night on Aug. 13 to hopefully get him closer to his goal of over $5,000, the amount raised by his “Keep Calm and Paddle On” initiative last year.
People are encouraged to come out and support his efforts by buying entrance tickets and bingo cards on the evening. It promises to be a fantastic night of fun and lots of prizes. There are many items up for grabs, worth a significant amount of money, so odds are good that you could win something worth more than you spent. Each entrance ticket includes a welcome drink, raffle ticket and appetizers.
Keeping Muratagic company on his quest across Lake Louise, Johnson Lake, Two Jack Lake, Spray Lakes, Vermillion Lake, Bow River, Lake Diefenbaker and the South Saskatchewan River, will be Chad Guenter, a Canadian firefighter. Together they plan to paddle until Sept. 7, when they will reach their final destination after crossing a considerable distance on nothing but paddle boards.
“It’s about raising funds and awareness for our kids who are placed in foster homes for reasons such as abuse and neglect and are in need of care and protection,” Muratagic explained to Caymanian Compass journalist Laura Buttigieg, who originally covered the story behind “Keep Calm and Paddle On.”
The bingo fundraiser runs from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. and people are encouraged to get there early for a good seat. Entrance tickets are $10, and bingo cards are $5 each, a five-pack for $20, and a 15-pack for $50. For tickets and more information, please call 949-5189.
